Our family always make a Birthday cake for Jesus. Making the cake according to these instructions ensures that every part of your cake has meaning and just describing the meaning allows one to easily share the Gospel. Plus, the kids (and parents) have a great visual of how our lives should revolve around Jesus with the candles being placed around the candle that represents Jesus.
The following was excerpted from The ADVENTure of Christmas by Lisa Whelchel:
Ingredients: 1 box white cake mix, Red/Green/Yellow Food coloring, 1 container white frosting, Two 8 or 9 inch round cake pans, 1 large white taper candle, 1 box small birthday candles (enough for each child)
Directions:
Prepare cake batter according to directions on the box.
Divide the batter evenly between two bowls.
Butter and flour cake pans.
Add several drops of red food coloring (representing the blood of Jesus) to the first bowl of batter. Mix well and pour into the first cake pan.
Add several drops of green food coloring (representing eternal life) to the second bowl of batter. Mix well and pour into the second cake pan.
Bake the cake layers according to the direction on the box.
Let cool and then remove from the pans.
Add several drops of yellow food coloring (representing the birthday of the Son of Righteousness) to the white frosting.
Fill and frost the red and green layers with the yellow frosting.
Place the large white taper candle (representing Jesus as the center of our lives) in the middle of the cake.
Give each member of the family a small birthday candle (representing our lives revolving around Jesus) and have them place the candles around the perimeter of the cake.
Sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus.
Using the “Jesus” candle, light the smaller birthday candles.
Say a prayer and blow out the candles!
Our family has hosted over a dozen Birthday parties for Jesus over the years. It is powerful evangelism tool to share with kids who don't know Jesus. A bonus is that the parents who come to the party get the opportunity to hear the Gospel too.
